The Curriculum Intention

‘Musicality should be the centre of attention. There should be ongoing opportunities through practical music-making, listening to young people talking and playing, and watching them responding, to be able to form assessment judgements which are appropriate to the work they have done, and can be used to inform the next stage of their musical journey. Such assessments can be used over time to build up a portfolio of assessment data which demonstrates progression.’

  • The Lawnswood Music Department intends to deliver a curriculum based on the AQA GCSE Music and government set National Curriculum.
  • Composing, Performing, and Listening to Music are all key aspects of musical knowledge, skills, and understanding, and the emphasis placed on these needs is strong in all our classrooms.
  • Musicality is the centre of our department staff’s intention.
  • The criteria for each individual assessment is shared with pupils and used repeatedly for Assessment for learning tasks, peer and self-assessment activities and to support pupils in understanding how to develop and improve their work. The learning journey is used for each Scheme of Learning and is designed to inform students of the steps throughout the scheme, highlights points of assessment and also includes areas for Assessment for Learning.
  • Students are considered to be Developing, Meeting or Exceeding in Knowledge, Skills and Application of Music. The six strands shown in the spiral form the basis of the assessment and progression framework, showing the ways that pupils are being musical.
