Confidence

We believe that confidence in mathematics comes from understanding. Our curriculum is carefully sequenced so that new concepts are introduced in manageable steps and build on secure prior learning. By developing fluency first, students establish strong foundations before applying their understanding through reasoning and problem-solving.

Key ideas are revisited throughout the curriculum to strengthen recall, deepen understanding and help students make connections between different areas of mathematics. This enables students to approach increasingly complex concepts and unfamiliar problems with confidence.

Through the consistent use of representations, both concrete and pictorial, clear explanations and carefully designed learning experiences, students develop an appreciation of the coherent and connected nature of mathematics. These representations help students explore mathematical ideas before expressing, generalising and applying them algebraically. As their understanding grows, so does their confidence to think mathematically, justify their reasoning and tackle challenging and unfamiliar problems independently.

Ambition

We have high expectations for every student and encourage them to be ambitious about what they can achieve in mathematics. Through appropriate challenge, careful support and regular opportunities to apply their learning, students are encouraged to aim for the highest GCSE grades of which they are capable.

We want students to see GCSE Mathematics as a foundation for future study, rather than simply a qualification to complete. For example, students with a particular interest and aptitude for the subject can study Further Mathematics at GCSE. At Key Stage 5, we offer both A-level Mathematics and A-level Further Mathematics, providing a clear pathway towards mathematically demanding courses in further and higher education.

As an Axiom Maths partner school, we provide additional opportunities for students with the potential and enthusiasm to excel in mathematics. Through challenging and rewarding mathematical problems, students can explore ideas beyond the taught curriculum, deepen their mathematical thinking and learn alongside others who share their interest in the subject. Axiom Maths works with schools to provide mathematics circles that nurture mathematical potential, particularly among students whose opportunities may otherwise be limited.

Our ambition extends beyond examination success. We actively promote the wide range of careers in which mathematics plays an important role by drawing attention to mathematical applications and career pathways in lessons and through displays around the department. We want students to recognise where mathematics can take them and to develop the knowledge, skills and aspiration needed to pursue mathematics-related courses and careers.

Communication

Research indicates that the way students speak and write about mathematics can influence their understanding and success in the subject (Morgan, 1995; Gergen, 1995). We therefore place a strong emphasis on mathematical communication, in line with the school’s focus on oracy: the ability to express ideas clearly and confidently through speech.

Mathematical terminology is taught explicitly, supported by clear definitions and revisited repeatedly across topics and year groups. Teachers model precise mathematical language and use strategies such as sentence stems to help students explain their methods, justify their reasoning and respond to the ideas of others.

Through purposeful questioning and discussion, students learn to express their thinking in complete, well-structured responses. They are encouraged not only to give an answer, but also to explain how they reached it and why their approach works. This strengthens their understanding and enables them to use mathematical terminology with clarity and confidence.
