The Curriculum Intention

“D&T education makes a unique and valuable contribution to the education and preparation for life for every child – at work or leisure. For some it can be the start-point for highly satisfying and successful careers in industries that bring increasing economic benefit to the UK” -  DATA (Design and Technology Association).

The Lawnswood Design Technology curriculum is delivered through a variety of creative and practical activities, where students are taught the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to engage in an iterative process of designing and making. They work in a range of domestic and local contexts for example, the home, health, leisure and culture and industrial contexts for example, engineering, manufacturing, construction, food, energy, agriculture (including horticulture) and fashion.

At Lawnswood we are delivering a curriculum which will prepare students to participate confidently and successfully in an increasingly technological world. Students will gain awareness and learn from wider influences on Design and Technology including historical, social, cultural, environmental and economic factors.

The lawnswood Design and Technology curriculum aims to ensure all pupils:

  • through designing understand contexts, users and purposes.
  • through designing generate, develop, model and communicate ideas.
  • through making be able to plan – producing schedules, select suitable materials processes, equipment and machinery.
  • through making learn about practical skills and techniques.
  • can evaluate their own ideas and products.
  • can evaluate existing products.
  • can evaluate key events and individuals such as designers, engineers, technologists and manufactures and be able to relate their products to their own designing and making.
  • cevelop technical knowledge so that they can make their products work.
  • experience lively, interactive and challenging content that meets the specification requirements and prepares the students for practical, portfolio work and demanding examinations.
