The Curriculum

EPR

EPR 'should explore the important roles that religious and non-religious worldviews play in all human life.  this is an essential area of study if pupils are to be well prepared for life in a world where controversy over such matters is pervasive ad where many people lack the knowledge to make their own informed decisions.  It is a subject for all pupils, whatever their own family background and personal beliefs and practices.'

The Curriculum Intention

The EPR curriculum is designed to follow the Leeds Agreed syllabus.  It has been written to ensure that all pupils investigate the beliefs and practices of religions and other world views; this can be seen through the explicit delivery of units of work on Hinduism (year 7), Buddhism (year 8) and Christianity (year 9) as well on an implicit focus on religion throughout the Philosophy and Ethics schemes.  We aim to investigate how religion and other world views address questions of meaning, purpose and value; we consider our place in the world and how it interlinks with others, in its diversity as well as its inclusion (such as our ‘What makes a good leader?’ unit reviewing the work of figures such as Malala and Martin Luther King).  We encourage our young people to consider how religions and other world views influence our morality, identity and diversity.  This is evident in our work examining views on the Afterlife as well as Global Issues, such as Nuclear weapons and Plastic in our environment.

To fulfil these aims, teaching and learning is  focused around rigorous investigation of key questions, an ‘enquiry model’. Questions for enquiry are contemporary, relevant and engaging. Study of religious and non-religious approaches to life  help to equip young people to explore personal questions of meaning and to engage with the profound issues and contemporary questions that face our communities now and in the future.
