Joe Carpenter - Year 10
I am about to start Year 11, and work hard to balance an exciting future in rugby with studying for my GCSEs.
I started off playing rugby at around 6/7 years old for my team West Park Leeds, who got to the semi-final of the Yorkshire Cup and only lost 2 games all season. I play rugby union and I play full back.
Last season I joined a rugby development programme called the ERDPP where I trained every month on a Monday with other players that got into this programme form many other clubs. It was a very different environment playing with players that you used to playing against, to suddenly find I had to play alongside them, but I settled in comfortably. The ERDPP is the lowest level in the stages to become an elite rugby player.
This year I have pushed up into the u15s JDS (Junior Development Squad) which is at the Carnegie Academy, where they coach us every week to make us better as rugby players. I played in Team 1 in the Newark Festival against other premiership academies from across England. Playing the likes of Leicester Tigers, Sale Sharks, Northampton Saints and others. From that tournament I was selected to go to a North of England camp where I trained for 2 days with the best 36 players at my age from the North of England.Being coached by top flight coaches that see players develop into national players.
Earlier in the season I played for Yorkshire A team at county level playing for the White Rose, where unfortunately we lost to Lancashire but soon after went on to beat Cheshire quite convincingly. I had to do a trial where over 60 other players fought for a place to get in the A or B team and I talented enough to get picked first, starting full back in the A team!
All at Lawnswood are excited to see how Joe continues to develop on the rugby field after such a brilliant season.
