The most important focus of the EPR department this half term has been to try to support of young people to come to terms with current events which have caused upset and fear.  As a department, we want to provide a safe place to discuss feelings openly and put context to world affairs so that they don’t seem overwhelming or scary.  We wanted to offer a framework for our pupils to be able to articulate big emotions and difficult thought processes.  As such, we delivered a series of sessions, tailored to specific events such as the bombing in Manchester.  In these lessons, we tried to reassure pupils and also tried to ensure the media was not responsible for forming their views and opinions.

“What happened in Manchester on the night of the Ariana Grande concert is extremely difficult to talk about, no words could possible convey all of the emotions that we were feeling about it.  Despite this, we were given a safe space in EPR to discuss all our thoughts and fears.  This helped us to see the whole story and learn about the people who were there to help in such a sudden and desperate situation.  We refocused our attention away from the one person who had evil intentions on to the thousands of good people who helped and reached out to support strangers.  We all came to the same conclusion – the Muslim community are not to blame for the actions of one who claimed he was part of them.  Islam is a kind and peaceful religion and this was shown in how Muslims all over the country reacted.  This one person wanted us to turn on one another, he wanted us to be afraid and divide us up.  This opportunity in EPR has brought us closer together, one community – just so happens some of us a different in some ways but we are all one Lawnswood community.”  Grace Willis
