Diversity Forum

The Diversity forum meet every Tuesday after school in The EAL Department. This year they have been really busy working on a number of projects.

‘Hearts and Hope’s is one of the projects we have been working on with My Bright Kite. Pupils made friendship bracelets and wrote messages of hope for children in Vial Refugee Camp in Greece. Over the Easter holidays these were delivered to the children in the camp and this video shows some of them receiving these small gifts of hope.

As a school we are committed to raising awareness and supporting refugee charities as a number of our pupils come from a refugee background. The ‘Freedom of Voice Film Project’ is another exciting project the pupils have been working on. They have been selected to make a number of films about their journeys and experiences of arriving in the UK from other countries.

Pupils have been writing and producing images to accompany their stories and these are due to be filmed and animated later on this term. We hope to be able to premier a group video during Refugee Week in assemblies across the year groups. This experience has helped a number of our pupils to process what has happened to them and we hope once the films are shared they will foster a greater understanding and insight into what child refugee and asylum seekers have to go through.

In addition to these projects pupils are working on a Ramadan Assembly and putting plans in place for our end of year community picnic ‘Lawnfest’. In preparation for ‘Lawnfest’ we plan to have the day before the event with parents making food for our international food stall, we are currently busy making bunting and plan a parade of nations and identities on the day. Hopefully the sun will shine like last year and as we are collaborating this year with the music, drama and PE department it is definitely going to be an exciting event where we hope many of our parents and families with bring along a picnic and share in the fun.

The Diversity Forum continues to be a popular student group and we are always keen to welcome new members and new ideas. If you are interested in being involved pop along to S05 Tuesdays after school.
